ORDER UP! JJBA Food Zine

★ PROJECT CLOSED ★
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!
---

Order Up! is an illustrative fanzine featuring two of the best things in life: JoJo characters and food! Imagine your favorite character camping and cooking a meal, picnicking, baking treats, enjoying a lemon tart at a fancy café, swirling a bright absinthe in dim bar, partaking high tea in the garden etc...
The possibilities for food are endless!

About the Zine

(See Schedule below)

What are the zine specifications?
The zine will be about 6x9 inches, portrait, 300DPI.

Will the zine be physical or digital?
Both.

Will there be merchandise?
Oh yes! Merch may include prints, stickers, coasters, charms, pins, reusable muslin bags, digital wallpapers, etc. This list is tentative for now.

Is this zine SFW or NSFW?
SFW ONLY. No mature content will be allowed in the zine or on the Discord Server. Adults must take care to censor themselves with things regarding mature content. Minors must also be mindful that they are entering what could be a 18+ space, given the nature of the themes in JoJo.

How many contributors are you looking for?
We are currently looking for 30-35 page artists, though this could change depending on the interest and number of applications we receive.

We are also looking for 5 merch artists. (If Page artists can double up as merch artists that would be a plus.)

Will there be writers?
Unfortunately, we will not be taking writers for this project.

Is this zine project for-profit or for charity?
For-profit. If there are any profits made after production and shipping costs, these will be split among moderators and contributors based on work contribution. Check out more info in the FAQs.

How will contributors be paid?
Via PayPal. You must be 18+ to open a Paypal account. Minors who do not have access to PayPal must have a willing guardian to accept their share of profits. There will also be the option to donate to charity if one does not wish to receive their share of profits.

FAQ

Hi, I was wondering if you had an estimate for how much shipping to the UK would be?
Hello! Thank you for your interest and support! Unfortunately, we will not be opening our preorders to UK customers. This decision was not made lightly by the mod team. When we received your ask, we spent the next few days discussing and researching the 2021 UK VAT laws. We considered various options, including opening an Etsy store, but that would incur high costs on UK customers, which we didn't think would be fair to you, and also it would be a lot of work running and maintaining 2 stores on our part. So this is our decision for now. We hope you understand. If this changes further down the line, we will make sure to update on our social media to let everyone know.

Hello! I was just wondering, for the applications, if it's okay for some of our pieces to be short multi-page comics? I understand if it isn't, I just wanted to check--thank you!
Hey Anon! Yes it's totally okay to have short comics in your submission! As long as you feel they showcase the skills which you would like to demonstrate for the zine ✨

Is it alright if we get the piece done before the schedule check-ins, or should we pace ourselves so we can make any suggested changes?
You’re more than welcome to finish your pieces earlier than the schedule check-ins, as long as you’re not rushing yourself. If you would like art critiques or suggestion for changes, contributors will be able to message freely on Discord. We hope this helps! :)

The countdown video you posted on Twitter is really cute! May I know who made it?
Of course! Thank you so much for this sweet compliment. We're so happy you liked it~ It was actually a collaborative group effort of our team!

@dragonpigeons added the SFX

@karenaikara drew the chibi JoJos and also made the animations & SFX

and @mehgumi drew the foods & background, including the logo!

Are we allowed to stream our pieces in Twitch?
Due to the exclusivity of the zine’s content and its for-sale nature, we ask that Contributors do not reveal any contents of their zine illustration prior to the moderator’s approval.

For the portfolio, do we have to make a page and put our best artworks there? Or can we use our social medias like Instagram as portfolios and send the links of each artwork we want to show in the application?
In our Application form, we'll ask applicants to send 3-5 of your best works in an accessible drive folder (cloud, sta.sh, google drive, etc.) for quicker access and better organization. We will also request a link for your social media account separately from your portfolio. Further instructions will appear in our Contributors Application form too!

Hi! I was wondering why the creation time was so short? Is it because it's summer?
Good question! Creation times vary depending on how a zine may organize their schedule. For the JJBA Food Zine we wanted to have all our zines/orders shipped out before the holiday rush at the end of the year. Even though we aim to finish by the end of December, holiday rush begins for us around the end of November. We hope this answers your question!

Will you still be able to purchase the (zine) after the pre-orders?
Yes, we'll have leftover sales (keeping cool in the fridge) so whoever missed the pre orders can purchase a copy! However, we recommend purchasing a copy fresh during pre orders if possible - the sales during PO period will count towards reaching stretch goals as well-earned treats! Not to mention that the quantities of zine and merch are going to be limited during leftover sales - best to grab a copy while they're hot!

Is this going to be a recipe/cookbook zine or just food related art?
Our zine will be including food related art. However, we will also feature a few recipes that appear in the JoJo’s series too, so please look forward to that!

In the future, if time is willing and there’s still interest, we would love to make a cookbook version!

Is it ok if we apply and we only like some JoJo parts and not all? For example only part 1 and 3 but not the other ones? Or do we need to love the entire JoJo canon in order to participate?
You can definitely apply! Some of us like certain parts more than others, it's just how the cookie crumbles! 🍪
We'll try our best to accommodate what you prefer drawing, though there can be a chance you might not be able to draw your first choice as we would like a diversity of art for all parts.

Will you need some previous JoJo art samples to apply as an artist?
We would love to see your rendition of the JJBA characters and it’s highly encouraged to submit zine quality samples with JoJo characters but not required! As long as you have zine quality illustrations in your portfolio and a huge love for JoJo, we would love for you to apply!

Do illustrations have to be feasible within the JoJo canon?
Nope, we welcome illustrations of canon AND non-canon meals and moments! You can paint characters from different parts cooking together or protagonists and antagonists having a picnic together- whatever tickles your taste buds!

That being said, we wish to avoid spoiler-heavy works (such as major plot points and reference to character deaths) in our zine, so we'll ask our contributors to please be mindful of that when working on their zine illustrations.

What are your thoughts in working with "problematic" people?
We're not sure what you mean by problematic, but we wish to create a safe space for our contributors on the project. We have community rules in place which, if broken, will result in warnings and/or removal, depending on how severe the offence is. We take everyone's comfort and safety very seriously, and don't condone harassment and hate speech.

In the portfolios, are realistic pieces (such as anatomy studies or examples of a realistic style in general) required?
We welcome all kinds of artistic styles! Please include completed works you have done that you think are zine worthy in your portfolio, rather than WIPs, sketches, or studies. We will be limiting the artwork submissions to 3-5 complete pieces. Please take care in selecting artworks that exhibit the style you want to show in the zine!

During our review of contributor applications, we will be reviewing the understanding of art fundamentals such as composition, color theory, and anatomical proportions with consideration of people's personal art styles. Whether you draw with a Claude Monet impressionistic flourish or a Showa period retro anime style, we're excited to see completed artworks that you enjoyed creating!

Is there a minimum age to contribute?
Because of the themes of the JJBA manga and anime, and for the for-profit nature of our project, we accept possible minor contributors who are 16yo and over, only if they have parental permission. All minors should go over the FAQ together with their guardians and receive parental permission to apply.

To apply as a merch artist do we have to had made merch before?
No, previous merch experience is not required, but samples of your artwork that can double up as merchandise would help! IE: chibis you've drawn in the past, art compositions that would look nice as a small print, etc. For applications, you are required to submit a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 artworks for your portfolio. More artworks does not always mean better. When the time comes, please choose artworks that you're most proud of and that exhibit your potential!

Is there going to be any guest artists?
Yes! We have several guest artists in mind, and then the majority of our contributors will be selected through applications.

If by the end of the applications we're turning 18, is the parental permission still obliged?
If you are turning 18 by the end of applications, we still strongly advise you to receive parental permission to apply. As this is a for-profit zine, our contributors must have a PayPal account to receive their remuneration, and PayPal requires you to be 18+ to open an account. We also aim to send contributors at least a physical copy of the zine if sales go well, so your mailing address and other info will be needed (if you choose to receive it). Please make sure to discuss with your guardians about the zine project and finances.

What is a zine?
A zine is a collection of works by a number of creators collaborating together, usually in the form of a collated book. For the JJBA Food Zine project, this will consist of an artbook and a selective variety of merchandise.

Will you be taking on pinch hitters?
We will consider it! Depending on the number of applications, we may take on 2-5 pinch hitters.

FYI: A pinch hitter is an applicant who may be contacted to fill in a spot in the project should a contributor drop out. The pinch hitter may have to work with a shorter deadline as a result. Please consider this when making your application.

Can artists collaborate on a piece together?
Yes! Keep in mind that both artists will need to communicate clearly with each other and the mods regarding their plan of action. They must adhere to the schedule that is also given to the other artists.

Can artists draw from Parts 1 - 8?
Yes! All JJBA parts are open for creative endeavors and we highly encourage applicants to consider drawing for any of them. Applicants may mark their choices in the contributor apps form. Though your first choice may not be guaranteed, we will do our best to accommodate the prompts you include on your application form.

Hold up, does this mean the zine will contain spoilers for Parts 6 - 8?
Actually, despite wanting to feature characters from Parts 6 - 8, we aim to keep all plot spoilers out of the zine. This is a food zine after all. Though it may contain spoiled food... look at your own risk!

Can artists draw characters from more than one Part together?
Yes! Again, we highly encourage this. The more the merrier to whet the appetite!

Can we choose which characters and setting(s) to draw?
Yes, you may put down in your application your top choices and ideas. Though your first choice may not be guaranteed, we will do our best to accommodate the prompts you include on your application form.

Wait. What about villains and side characters??
You can absolutely draw all the villains and side characters you want!!! Whatever lights the fire under your frying pan ;D

Will artists draw single page or double/spread?
The choice is up to you! Applicants may mark their choice in the contributor apps form.

Will artists need to draw detailed backgrounds/settings?
We would highly encourage our artists to place characters in interesting settings as long as it’s related to food. The amount of detail you put in will be up to you but we encourage you to sauce up your limits of creativity and composition! We will also be open to discussing ideas and inspiration with you :)

Is a specific art style preferred?
Not at all! We welcome all types of art style and hope to see a variety sprinkled in our JJBA food zine :D

Is traditional art allowed?
Absolutely! Make sure that it can be scanned at high resolution of at least 300DPI to the template size provided.

Are ships allowed?
We would like to keep this project general with platonic ships and no romantic ships unless canonical. We want the focus to be on the food.

Will there be stretch goals?
Yes we are planning to have stretch goals, physical and digital. This is yet to be fully confirmed but tentative ideas include shaker charms, foil/spot UV on zine cover, as examples.

What if I run into a problem and have to drop out/can’t meet deadlines?
Please check our schedule. If you know you will run into difficulties during our creation period, we highly advise you NOT to apply. We value commitment to our zine project and hope to see our efforts reciprocated with our chosen contributors.

We do not have the time to chase people up during check-ins. Simply put, if you do not respond within a week the team will drop you with a formal notification to your email.

Having said that, we understand how the world is a little bit crazy these days. Things happen which can impact our ability to commit, things which are simply beyond our control. If this happens to you as one of our contributors, we ask that you inform us as soon as you’re able and we can work something out together.

How will contributors be compensated?

1) Complimentary Zine
We aim to give contributors a complimentary zine as a baseline. In the event that the project does not break-even on production costs, contributors will be guaranteed a free copy of the PDF zine with digital merch. If profits allow, we would love to give contributors a free copy of the physical zine.

2) Profits Post-Shipment
Any profits left over after meeting production and shipping costs to customers may be split between the team. Moderators will receive a higher cut and contributors will receive remuneration according to what they've contributed. Payment percentages will be calculated during the zine creation process and will be kept confidential among contributors.

The matter of profits post-shipment will be discussed at a later date with our contributors. In the event that the profits left over are minimal, the option to donate to charity will be offered.

It is hard to foresee at this stage just how well sales will go. There will be a LOT of factors that determine this, including the fact that we are in the middle of a difficult time. Nobody knows how it could impact the project further down the line. Hence why we feel it would be best to see how things go and discuss this more towards the relevant time. At the very least we will endeavor to keep open communication with our contributors.
